If art rock really is to be the scene that defines this year - and Franz Ferdinand have made quite a case for it - the lead protagonists clearly need to step up to the plate. Bloc Party have created a buzz with two low-key singles and now it’s time for a stab at the mainstream.

And on the evidence of "Little Thoughts", they’ve delivered. There’s driving guitars, humming bass and stabbing drums replete with shades of Joy Division and post-punk. It’s a trim few minutes that begs for further listens to unravel just what it is that makes it all hang together so well.

They look cool. They sound cool. The art rock bandwagon is well and truly rolling.
