A strange one this. Taken on its own, "You Have Killed Me" is a generally underwhelming affair: a mid-paced, fairly reflective tune that finds Morrissey in open-hearted, humble mood. You won't be running onto the dancefloor when you hear it on a Friday night, or be glued next to your radio in the hope that it crops up - in fact, everything about it screams "This is not a single!" However! Taken in the context of the album as a whole, it's a bold, masterful song which matches the humanity of the lyric with a subtle melody and arrangement. "Ringleader Of The Tormenters" is Mozzer finally putting himself up for account - he's not attacking foes any longer, or dishing out spite, but coming to terms with his life, perhaps letting a little love in at last. And "You Have Killed Me" is that notion encapsulated in three minutes. In fact, the more you listen to Morrissey sigh "What's my life for?", the more you realise what a significant, emotional single this is. Finally, it's here - Morrissey in three dimensions. Cut to applause.
