In another universe, this would be the new Blur single. This gloriously atmosphere mélange of 21st century dub and traditional English songwriting is certainly what Damon was inching towards on the under-rated "Think Tank" album. But since the departure of Graham Coxon, fashion and credibility have decreed Blur a spent force - if you imagine a new Blur single, it's an inherently half-hearted, lukewarm affair. So the new Blur single comes out under a pseudonym, with a cast of supporting players.
But don't be fooled by the talk of supergroups. That may be Paul Simonon on the bass, Tony Allen on drums, and Simon TongDamon, as much an expression of his vision as any Blur record. Judging from the band's excellent live show at the Roundhouse last week,"Herculean" is the weakest track on the album. It'll take a few listens to sink into it properly, but once you're in, it's a fabulous place to be, the tone of "Modern Life Is Rubbish" taken thirteen years into the future. Welcome back, Damon.
