With The Zutons hogging the limelight for the past couple of years, thanks to the sterling efforts of Ronson and Winehouse, it's been easy to overlook The Coral. Indeed last year's "Roots And Echoes" album, recorded at Oasis's Buckinghamshire studio at the invitation of the Gallaghers (presumably as a thank you for inspiring the sound and style of "The Importance Of Being Idle"), slipped out with little fanfare. Where was the soul diva remix? The international supersmash? The talking point?
Judging by this supremely laid back and utterly gorgeous cut from said album, the absence of all of the above was the entire point. Not a great deal happens during this single: guitars jangle tastefully, James Skelly struggles with a crumbling relationship, and the song quietly and calmly meanders its way into your affections. In days gone by, they would have called this timeless. In 2008, we'll have to settle for it being a humble classic.
