Sometimes all you need is pure, simple talent, nothing else. Not too long ago, Cat Power was the queen of this kind of sparse, nagging, entrancing indie rock, but it soon became clear that her erratic nature could sometimes obscure her brilliance. Feist, cut from similar cloth but wholly unlikely to melt down suddenly onstage, is the Cat Power you can depend on. Whether that also makes her less of an electric shock to the heart is up to you, but right now the woman is surging ahead.
"My Moon My Man" is so simple you wonder how Feist can get away with it. Running over a basic three note piano sequence, the song is an exercise is seduction - nothing much happens in the verse beyond declarations of affection then Feist sighs "Take it slow, take it easy on me" for the chorus, almost melting through the words. The song builds but only at the gentlest of gradients before returning to its starting point. And yet it is utterly hypnotic. A quiet talent perhaps, but you should always watch the quiet ones.
