Goldfrapp - 'Happiness'

Released on 14/04/08
Label: Mute
Even on an average day, Goldfrapp are curious, alluring and, whether it's cinematic romance, lip-licking electro or their new folk fetish, very much worth hearing. When they marry that curiosity with rampant sexuality and a sly chorus, there's truly nothing better. Like a devilishly addictive spell, cast by a white witch dancing in a floaty smock in the middle of a wood, "Happiness" is everything that's genius about Goldfrapp.
Beguiling and relentlessly disturbing, the second single from their altogether more earthy and organic "Seventh Tree" album, is an unnervingly seductive invitation to join a happiness cult. For a cash donation, Alison Goldfrapp breathlessly promises to make it all better, while behind her the Zen backdrop intensifies to a delirious, writhing, brainwashed high. The jaded counter melody confirms that their point is that, sadly, there's no shortcut to that which we all seek, but for three tantalising minutes this salacious purr comes pretty close.
