Danger Mouse's collaboration with Martina Topley Bird makes perfect sense when you consider his genre blending production style, disdain for distinctions between white music and black music, may well have been partly forged by listening to "Maxinquaye", the astonishing debut by Tricky on which Bird played muse and siren. Unfortunately for both, their sensibilities are so similar, and their relationship so apparently smooth, that the sparks and tensions that flew between Bird and Tricky are lost, to the music's cost.
So "Poison" is elegant and stylish, and Danger Mouse's creamy bossanova merges well with Bird's typically understated vocal, but the song goes pretty much exactly where you think it will, rather than down the dark alleys and subways of her best work. Bird's brains and beauty would make her a wonderful pop star, but this is just a little too polite to make it happen.
