Kylie Minogue - 'In Your Arms'

Here's an amusing fact. A tacky gay megaclub in London regularly hosts "Madonna Vs Kylie" nights, where the two pop stars' biggest hits face each other off on the dancefloor. Which is like pitting Jaws against Flipper, America against Luxembourg, "War And Peace" against "Budgie The Little Helicopter". Or indeed Madonna's Timbaland versus Kylie's Calvin Harris. At the very moment Madonna has gazumped the zeitgeist yet again with her huge, gaudy "Hard Candy" record, Kylie is politely slipping out one of her safest and least surprising singles in a while. It's not that "In My Arms" is by any means bad. Calvin Harris' sherbert dip synths, all sugar and fizz, give it verve, and the chorus is sweetly catchy. But it's just so very obviously Kylie, so obviously catered to her slight vocal charms and low calorie personality. Kylie is best when subjugated by a juggernaut of a song (the soaring "Confide In Me", the android "Can't Get You Out Of My Head") and this is too respectful to make the grade. File under forgettable.
