With Santogold fast becoming the fashionista favourite of 2008 and The Ting Tings deservedly chewing up the charts, it's not impossible to imagine 26-year-old Australian Ladyhawke also enjoying success, something which would have been unimaginable just one year ago. Like those others, on "Paris Is Burning" she fuses lo-fi '80s beats with disco shimmer and bubblegum girl pop, displaying a magpie musical sensibility.
Unfortunately - and unlike those others - she fails to stamp her personality thoroughly on the song or to top its jittery verses off with a killer chorus. Ladyhawke's clearly talented (she's a capable multi-instrumentalist) and there's an unpredictability at work here which is a blessed relief from the shark-like machinations of Duffy or Adele, but "Paris Is Burning" may be just a little too slight to raise her above the tide of quirky, '80s indebted female singers flooding MySpace in near Biblical quantities.
