Released on 30/06/08
Label: Mute
To those of us who watched with delight as Alison Goldfrapp morphed from her early pose of mannered chanteuse to slightly demented cybersex siren, her powers of reinvention are no surprise, but there was still something rather abrupt about her recent metamorphosis into apple-cheeked dairy maid skipping round an orchard. Still, as anyone who saw their wonderful recent show at the Royal Albert Hall will know, the duo have pulled the sonic transformation off with their usual panache.
"Caravan Girl" is probably the most immediate song from the "Seventh Tree" album and, sunshiny as it is, is a perfect way to beg this fitful summer to hang on for a while. Built on an insistent acoustic strum and understated synth swirls, Alison delivers a vocal of pure dreamy cream, a hymn to the joys of running away into the sunset. And if you do miss the spiky oddity of the old Goldfrapp, well, a woman can change her mind, particularly if she's Alison Goldfrapp.
