Madonna - 'Give It 2 Me'

(Thursday July 3, 2008 9:55 PM )

Released on 30/06/08
Label: Maverick

Good old Boy George once said quite brilliantly of Madonna that she could really use an hour on a bouncy castle, and she does indeed seem a peculiarly humourless and joyless individual in real life. Which makes it all the more impressive that she can still make music of such frivolity and frothiness as "Give It 2 Me", the catchiest cut from her gaudy "Hard Candy" album.

You can always tell when Madonna is having fun or at least simulating it because she employs the helium vocals with which she first emerged, rather than the self-consciously deeper notes she employs on what she no doubt describes as her "art" records.

"Give It 2 Me", on the other hand, fairly skips along on fizzy Pharrell Williams synths, bearing more than a little resemblance to Kelis' brilliant "Trick Me". Lyrically, she's still fervently insisting she really likes sex, honest, though of course we all suspect she'd rather spend six hours pounding a treadmill while conference calling her business managers.
