Albert Hammond Jr - 'GfC'

(Thursday July 17, 2008 11:49 AM )

Released on 14/07/08
Label: Rough Trade

Taking time from The Strokes to deliver two albums in quick succession, Albert's dalliance with tabloid siren Agyness Deyn should ensure a media profile residing somewhere between Pete Doherty and Jamie Hince. At least on this side of the pond, where such matters are a national obsession. All well and good for prospective record sales, of course, but it would be a shame for gossip and tittle-tattle to detract from the fact that this curly-haired son of NYC is actually, quietly, pretty good. Debut "Yours To Keep" and this year's "¿Cómo Te Llama?" were certainly better than "First Impressions Of Earth".

Seemingly picking up tips from his old man (curly-haired co-writer of Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now") "GfC" is a subtle piece of composition, all jangling riffs and jerking bass lines, made with a band including Sean Lennon. Initially slight, its melody lingers long - and though the whiff of Swiss finishing school remains, the achievements are considerably more than our own second generation of Jaggers, Maccas, Osbournes and Woods. US rock gentry 1 - UK rock gentry 0.
