Label: Mercury/Universal
Fans of David Holmes, DJ, soundtrack mastermind and general ambient-pop-rock-doodler, will be heartened to know that despite being a staggering eight years in the making - well, he was busy scoring "Ocean's 11/12/13" - this first taste of his fourth album proper, "Holy Pictures", is every inch a David Holmes record. Which is to say ambiguous, shapeless, yet strangely likeable. He is simultaneously inventive, derivative, forward-thinking, retrospective and incredibly hard to pin down.
Qualities which the low-humming, insistent psychedelic rock of "I Heard Wonders" offers in spades. Is it beguiling and intriguing in its atmospheric Velvet Underground-esque haze or is it just darkly pulsating background music? All the mind-wandering it inspires makes it hard to know. What is clear, however, is that like everything else he touches, this loose-limbed and seemingly missable leftover from some score or other - it should literally have opening credits written all over it - is deceptively addictive.
