Sugababes - 'No Can Do'

(Wednesday December 24, 2008 12:57 PM )

Released on 22/12/08
Label: Universal

If proof were needed that the once unparalleled Sugababes have lost their way, cheap Jackson Five pastiche "No Can Do" is it. Where once they were a byword for sultry sophistication, sexual tension and all that was good about pop music, they're now to be found rehashing karaoke classics into throwaway feel-good filler. Less about making future classics of their own and more about making up the numbers on daytime radio, the Sugababes are a shadow of their former selves.

No doubt the ever changing line-up has played its part in diluting their original plan to be the thinking pop-fan's girl band, but even so, this is painfully out of character. While the verses are suitably dark and slinky and the bridge to the chorus similarly feisty in its minor harmonies, when the inanely grinning chorus piles in - "I Want You Back" as performed by "X-Factor" auditionees - things take a worse than mediocre turn that they never recover from. Now a poor third to Girls Aloud and The Saturdays, it should never have come to this.
