Along with the post-New Year comedown comes the inevitable hedging of bets as selected cultural commentators and other ne'er-do-wells who float around the media orbit tell the great unwashed just what exactly is going to be the Next Big Thing TM over the coming twelve months. Though claiming to gaze into their cultural crystal balls, you can't help but feel that the hipsters, flipsters and scenesters are being a little disingenuous when it comes to 2009's contenders.

Take New York disco popette Lady GaGa, for instance. Having already topped the charts in Canada and Australia and reaching the number two slot in her native America with "Just Dance", you'd think that the odds of Lady GaGa making it here are pretty good. Like, thanks for the tips, guys!

"Ah, yes", counter the trendsetters. "Sneer if you must but Lady GaGa is a welcome return to a strong female solo artist making joyously giddy electro disco music that loses itself in a swirl of hedonistic abandon." Quite so agrees Yahoo! Music. Especially if you've never heard Cher's "Believe" slowed down by 75bpm, anything by Madonna from the '80s or a single pop record that has charted in the last 30 years. Back to the future again, then.
