If songs were judged on conviction alone, Bryn Christopher's "Fearless" would top every chart going. Nothing, but nothing, comes close to it for sheer force of will and strength of passion. To swathes of glistening synth strings, and layer upon layer of wailing harmonies, the hotly-tipped Birmingham soulboy who's yet to fulfil his next big thing promise, bellows with unparalleled might his assertion that nothing's going to stand in his way. A fine sentiment, delivered with dignity, aplomb and sinew tearing force.
Unfortunately for Christopher, conviction alone can never be enough, and in this case, it's actually way too much. While no one would doubt his sincerity, the chances of finding anyone able to endure the ferocity of his feeling for more than a verse, are slim. To be frank, it's all just a little bit painful and grating. His words and fervour should inspire and fill the listener with a triumphal sense that anything is possible. Instead they make you grimace and turn the volume down. Overblown is an understatement.
