Sky Larkin - 'Beeline'

Label: Wichita

Whatever happened to Leeds and its surrounding areas? Once upon a windswept and gloomy time, the Yorkshire city contained so many Goths and black-clad types that it was a wonder the British horror movie industry wasn't resurrected with all the gusto of Dracula rising from the grave. The bats have fled the bell tower, indeed…

More recently Leeds has succumbed to the dubious charms of regulation indie. Kaiser Chiefs shot their bolt early and have subsequently struggled to maintain their initial momentum whereas The Pigeon Detectives came to personify everything that was wrong with parochial and narrow-minded musical concerns. And The Music? Whatever did happen to The Music?

Three -piece Sky Larkin are making all the right moves and sounds thanks to this sparky and spiky nugget. Owing more to the US indie scene (well, it would; former Sleater-Kinney producer John Goodmanson helmed the sessions) then any local concern, "Beeline" is on the tolerable side of twee with a side order of snarl thrown in. Fine on its own terns but hardly likely to break on through.
