It may smack of "what's left in the, er, vault" by The ArtistFormerly Known As's... former employers, but that doesn't mean thiscollection - recorded between 1985 and 1994, doesn't boast some corker tracks. Most notably, the easy as you like smooth r'n'b, as apposed to r&b, grooveof '5 Women +' and the delicate lovelorn 'She Spoke To Me'.
And if the odd Miles Davis tribute drags on too long, what the hell,it's a pleasure to be able to listen to a new Prince (just to write thename without feeling guilty is a joy) record that has some decent songs on it.And if ten tracks yields around four must-haves, that's about three more thanmost new albums you buy these days, right? Prince fans will love it whilethose of us who've strayed will be glad of the chance to huddle back in the foldif only temporarily.
With a new single about to be unleashed, 'The Vault' makes a greatstop gap.
