Aphrodite is the master of the rollin'' riff, the seemingly simple hooky bass synth line that thrills as it chills. So it''s no surprise that his eponymous album is packed with varieties on this riff, but it packs a few interesting punches too. There''s plenty of jump up but there''s also boogying on down on occasions when it gets silkily mellow or mildly jazzy. ''Spice'' has an evocative jazzy sax intro before mashing it into a typical Aphrodite bass bin riff. He goes funky on tunes like ''B. M. Funkster'' which samples from Marva Whitney''s ''Unwind Yourself'' , while ''Rinsing Quince'' samples Quincy Jones'' ''Summer In The City'' and tops it with vocals-with-attitude from T C Izlam. There''s even a bit of humour too. Plaintive seagull cries make for great FX on ''Cross Channels'', which actually does evoke ruff seas, and there are some gorgeous dub echoes and reverbs in the tune that stop the waves from peaking too high.
