As evidence of The Jam''s pervasive influence on the contemporary music scene, artists as varied as Liam Gallagher, Everything But The Girl, Garbage, Gene, Silverson and Reef all gather to pay tribute on this cover album. In the wake of Tom Jones'' ''Reload'' and the glut of other tribute/cover albums around at the moment it''s easy to be dismissive of such experiments. In this case cynics can take a back seat as this is really rather good. Beastie Boys go funky on a version of ''Start!'' that is miles away from the original. Other standouts include Ben Harper on ''The Modern World'' and Gene''s authentic sounding ''Town Called Malice''. And of course we can''t forget Liam Gallagher & Steve Craddock''s ''Carnation'', the first single to be lifted from the album. Paul Weller would hopefully approve.
