The INCredible series continues with its best selection yet from jazz music''s man on the inside, Gilles Peterson. It is, again, a sprawling compilation, with a whole 28 tracks on offer. Now that he knows just how much he can get away with from road testing some serious stuff on his Wednesday night shows for Radio 1, Gilles pushes his choices far beyond those he came up with for the Journeys By DJ compilation. Those who are tempted in by 4 Hero or A Tribe Called Quest should be pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of Pharoah Saunders'' sublime and unusually accessible ''Rejoice'' with which he kicks off CD2. The rest of the music is as diverse as you might expect with the Braziliance of Elza Soares juxtaposed with the contemporary Latin rhythms of Carl Craig, the bass-heavy garage soul of MJ Cole shouldering the flower power of Minnie Ripperton''s ''Les Fleur'' and the disorientating science of King Britt''s mix of Soul Dharma fused with the unbridled joy and celebration of Pharoah Saunders. This compilation comes at the perfect time for Gilles Peterson with the contents of his record box never more widely appreciated throughout a career of playing second fiddle to the massive popularity of mainstream club culture. Now the acid house generation that once brushed past Peterson in their rush to celebrate his Ibiza-inspired contemporaries have tired of the increasingly commercial nature of that music and turned again to the roots of the dance and contemporary producers who are trying to push forward within that tradition. This album is a fitting tribute to a thriving genre.
