So it's George's turn to do a Kevin Rowland. But this is less karaoke and more like the Billy Bunter Big Brass Band Plays Standards from the Bopper's Boudoir.
There are classic compositions from the likes of Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rogers and, hey, even Sting. 'Roxanne', the track singled out for release, is an obvious choice for Michael in numerous ways, especially because his voice is well suited to this most contemporary of the album's songs and gives it a gentle reinterpretation. He is beautifully accompanied throughout, but when he plays big band classics there is something wrong.
After a little consideration, it becomes impossible to ignore the problem - this isn't Frank Sinatra, nor is it Billie Holiday, it's not even Harry Connick Junior. It's that bloody bloke from Wham!
Think about it, if we were to suggest that in 10 years time you'd think it perfectly acceptable to lap up a cover album of 'Songs for Swinging Lovers' performed by Five you'd laugh. But this is pretty much what has happened here. So beware of the bland and invest in the originals if you're looking for Christmas presents.
