Seriously swift scratching and crate diggin' from the deepest cellars qualify DJ Magic Mike as uniquely different to his Detroit bass counterparts like DJ Assault. However, there is plenty of the same old booty obsession, which is - be honest - a bit juvenile. Oh well, hip-hop without lyrics would have to find a way of offending people. And this selection of classic breaks, pitched up, heavy on the gain and expertly scratched to bits, isn't likely to upset anyone other than the coffee table trip-hoppers.
It's fun but it's not some radically new sound, just a bass-heavy and roughed up variation on what hip-hop DJs do. Nonetheless, in the current breaks-obsessed UK climate this is bound to be gladly received and it's a lot more fun than some of the big beat that's knocking around.
