After the enormous international success of single 'Sing it Back', which made its way to the turntables of clubs from Blackpool to Brazil, it's difficult to conceive of Moloko as an albums band. However, with 'Things To Make And Do' they prove they are and, more surprisingly, that they are capable of more than merely writing incessantly infectious and catchy dance tunes.
Whatever your opinion of 'Sing it Back' (originally appearing on the 'I Am Not A Doctor' album), it was the Ibiza anthem of last summer, etching its upfront refreshing beats into the minds of the nation for far longer than your average dance hit. On 'Things To Make And Do' we are treated to the full 12" mix.
Moloko aren't afraid of over-producing, in fact, they positively embrace it. 'Pure Pleasure Seeker' is a simple pop soul workout with chunky beats. Roisin Murphy's vocals sound like they've been put through a multitude of filters to eradicate the impurities, leaving production to boost the simple musical formula.
There are diverse, creative moments, 'If You Have A Cross To Bear You May As Well Use It As A Crutch' sees Moloko move into guitar based rock. Curious. Mix this in with the blinding light of the disco ball on 'The Time Is Now' and its Latino flavoured guitar rhythms, and a strange brew is the outcome.
Lyrically the themes of 'Things To Make And Do' cover love, sex and relationships and yet come across as contrived and rather glib. But, despite these quibbles Moloko have managed to produce a diverse, soundly produced pop album, and for that they should be praised.
