Emerging from that epicentre of German experimentalism, Dusseldorf, Kreidler return with their first album for a good few years. The loss of Stefan Schneider to Berlin's To Rococo Rot has meant a slight departure in their sound, though the original tenets of spacious frameworks filled with al that's magical and wonderful to behold still forms the base of what they do.
Witness the quirky, catchy pop of 'Mnemorex' which sees Momus (allegedly the last hip intellectual of pop music) provide a song so innocuous that you'll feel back at school again, even though it's full of bizarre lyrics. Listen also to the electronic meets dubwise stylings of 'Do It', a typically Kreidlerian mix of bleeped out electro-pop.
'The Main' is quirky too, sounding like the soundtrack to the life of a lop-sided cartoon character whereas 'Bewitched' continues in the same quasi-surreal vein but fills the spaces with sunburst keyboards and rolling beatwork.
'Sans Soleil' brings in a more brooding, contemplative feel where 'Beauties' goes off key and suggests newly discovered worlds of sound merging with an almost psychedelic edge. 'Ashes' employs a much dancier flavour, sub-techno with melancholic keys and shimmering, finely polished bodywork that's almost irresistablly balanced between the cool distance of Detroit and the warmer soul of Chicago.
