Duran Duran - 'Rio'

(Thursday June 14, 2001 11:19 AM )

Released on 11/06/2001
Label: EMI

That Eighties revival just keeps on coming. And if ever an album summed up this period perfectly, it's this second offering from those New Romantic Brummie lads with the padded shoulders, Dynasty hair-dos and an overly enthusiastic approach to make-up.

'Rio' made it to Number Two back in 1982 and this re-issued, remastered CD package (enhanced with three video tracks) still sounds as fresh as it did back when snoods and Japanese slippers were all the rage - oh yes they were actually, ask your mum.

The main reason for 'Rio's longevity is, of course, the songs. Regardless of fashion, Simon Le Bon and the boys' blend of pop and funk, which they described as 'The Sex Pistols-meets-Chic', with the odd nod to Bowie and Roxy Music, is timeless, classic pop.

If proof were needed that there was more substance to Duran Duran than glossy videos -they were one of the few bands to use the medium well- and shiny effeminate suits, then this album is the outfit's defining moments.

Take the robust driving funk and guitar slashes of the title track -it's atmospheric fade-in one of the most exciting starts to an album ever- the fat bass, cheesy synth and funky licked swagger of 'My Own Way', the anthemic, rock-tinged 'Hungry Like The Wolf' and sumptuous semi-tropical ballad 'Rio' -which reached Number Two.

Then there's the less obvious, slow-burning gems like more reflective, melancholy, Japan feel of 'Lonely In Your Nightmare', the rowdy, rough-edged 'New Religion' or the dark and sinister, slow Roxy style groove of album closer 'The Chauffeur'. All marvellous stuff.

Rap the whole package up in a Nagel print sleeve and you've got yourself one of the finest British pop albums of the last twenty years. Only this time you don't have to wear the stupid gear. Enjoy!
