That this album comes so highly recommended by respected members of the techno fraternity, speaks volumes for itself.
Dave Clarke is a big fan and Potential is one of the Space DJz own label.
What is clear, however, is that 'There Are Better Ways' falls into one of the two techno album camps. The first, which includes the Basic Channel CDs, Robert Hood's 'Internal Empire' or Richie Hawtin's 'Concept' CD, sees the album as statement of single direction techno. The other, which this album falls into, is the Slam 'Headstates' or Laurent Garnier 'Unreasonable Behaviour' blueprint, where every track heads in a new direction.
And that's 'There Are Better Ways' then. 'Pot Noodlez' is a warm jazzy techno excursion, while 'Imagination' is the kind of low slung b-line beast that wouldn't be lost on the floor at Wiggle. 'Left Behind' is melodic ambience, that finds its feet and goes off in a deep house meander.
The title track is a punishing Mills stomper and 'Persistent Offender' takes no fewer prisoners. 'Plain Song' takes the same tempo but adds sweet atmospherics.
All of which, you can see, leaves something for everyone. If you want
relentless stomping grooves or out-there experimentalism, this probably ain't for you. But if you have anything more than a passing interest in engaging melodic techno, check this.
