Dave Angel - Form and Function

(Monday September 3, 2001 1:00 PM )

Released on 10/09/2001
Label: Hooj / Airtight

No matter if you're a lazy dog or even if you're a big brown fox your limbs cannot help but be moved, grooved and soothed by this lush deep house compilation.

Brought to you by Hooj (those purveyors of top quality club music no matter what the genre) via Airtight (its house-oriented imprint), 'Form and Function' does things a little differently. This isn't the space for the wild hedonism or crass, four-to-the-floor stomp commercialism peddled by lesser compilations: no this is a trip to outer headspace.

Deeply introspective yet steering as far away from navel gazing as is humanly possible, 'Form and Function' sets out to explore the depths and scale the heights of that genre we know as Deep house.

You can't really go wrong by choosing a CD of this calibre that showcases the cream of deep house. Across two CDs, Charles Webster, Aqua Bassino, Roy Davis Jnr, Wamdue's Chris Brann, Trancesetters, Dave Angel and Circulation all feature and are just some of the players who, with a masterful sleight of hand, tease and please you with their seductively polyrhythmic, cerebrally-oriented delights.

But fear not, this does not mean that you're led haplessly into the self-indulgent mire of instrumental soundscapes that many would dare to pass off as deep house and without a map or compass to guide you back.

No - here you get some achingly beautiful moments: the heart of Nathan Larsen featuring Black Pearl's 'Standing Still' and Charles Webster's 'Your Life' throb with an overtly sensual and sexual vocal pulse whilst Nova Scotia's 'Loose Leaves' growls with a sinful bassline and sways with a summery vocal lilt. And if that isn't enough to butter you up, check the rolling percussion of Roy Davis Jnr's otherworldly synth excursion 'People From Mars' and Ambusher's unashamedly funky 'Super Science' then put your body in it.

CD2 continues in much the same vein, never breaking sweat but then never needing to: with keyboards plip-plopping throughout like the inspiration for so many dramatic thunderstorms but thankfully without the real unpleasant wetness.

The mix itself is cleverly arranged using the decresecendo of the cool-down drops, the pianissimo of its smooth segues and the crescendo of its percussive builds to excellent effect. All of which gives this an almost classical and indisputably luxurious cinematic scope.

Overall this is perfect for the darkened corners of your cooler clubs, for float tanks, candlelit baths, picnics and Rizzla parties.
