Teebee - Through The Eyes Of A Scorpion

(Thursday October 11, 2001 3:10 PM )

Released on 15/10/2001
Label: Certificate 18

The zenith of Norway's DJ Teebee has continued to rise over these last few years.

His penchant for pushing out stone cold rollers like got him noticed on the international circuit initially and eventually saw him become adopted as a kind of honorary member of the tight knit d & b scene.

He has continued to deliver fierce but beautiful sonic missiles in our direction, and now he's ready to smack suckers silly with his second long player.

Make no bones about it, 'Through The Eyes Of A Scorpion' (note: scorpions don't actually have any eyes - figure it out) is an accomplished and handsome LP.

The track that kickstarts the fireball rolling is 'Silent
Depths'; if you thought female voices always equalled sentimentality, think again.

This cut burns, burns, burns and sets up a dynamic moodscape from the off.

Teebee makes use of this impressive pace in a confident and upfront manner.

His intricate production techniques allow him to disappear quickly around hidden chicanes and through clandestine tunnels of sound, though he always re-emerges to deliver the killer punches required to make his music testy and relevant.

His emphasis on experimentation playing with abstract sound designs and constructing enigmatic electronic moods leads him to places none of us truly expected him to take us. Maybe he didn't know he'd end up there either.

His sonic universe is one where rhythms can happily ride off kilter and arrangements go beyond the usual DJ friendly rules of drum & bass, and that can only be a good thing.

Though Teebee definitely likes to make his music lurk in the shadows, there's nothing overly oppressive or aggressive about it. Sinister, definitely, gnashing, certainly, menacing, without a doubt. But this is one producer who doesn't rely on beating us over the head with basslines to get a point across.

Instead he just slowly raises that tail again and again and again and strikes at exactly the right place almost every time. Bright, beastly and even better than his first outing.
