Purveyors Of Fine Funk might take the plural by name, but it is the work of just one man, Dan Curtin.
Dan's been pursuing the deeper line between house and techno since 1992, so you're in good hands. As a resident of Cleveland, Ohio he was both close to but isolated from the sounds of techno and house emerging from Detroit and Chicago.
That probably explains why '
Fine Funk' lives up to its name. It is funk of the finest variety, all deep house licks and smooth techno washes. Dan's own style, developed in isolation from the two influential cities and which spans five albums and 56 singles, is always deep and jazzy, but with one eye on the dancefloor.
He avoids the harsh abrasion or modern minimal techno or the disco clichéof tired house, this is the real fonky sh*t and no mistake. 'Water and High' is the kind of belter Derrick's May and Carter could both drop. Mighty 'Fine' indeed.
