Back in the 90's, Cleveland City soared ahead as one of the UK's seminal house labels. Started by Mick Evans, who owned top dance shop Ruby Red in Wolverhampton, it kicked off in 1993 with classic house disco anthem 'Testament 1' by Chubby Chunks.
This was a DJ fave with the likes of Judge Jules who mixed the track with Jungle Brothers 'I'll House You'. The result was included on the first of the excellent Journeys By DJs series.
The label went from strength to strength churning out such classics as Screen II 'Hey Mr DJ', Direct 2 Disc 'Don't Stop', Minimal Funk 'Turn It To The House' and Rhyme Time Prod 'You And Me'. Cleveland's finest moment was dethroning Prince from the UK number 1 spot with Tony Di Bart's smash 'The Real Thing'.
Six of the tracks are included on new Brit flick Club Le Monde out in February 2002, a journey through club culture which features club land's most acknowledged hedonists, DJs Brandon Block, Alex P and Mr C.
This collection beautifully encapsulates the sound of an era. Whether you want a groovy trip down memory lane or to check out some of the coolest house there's been, this album is a must.
