SUPPERCLUB - Lounge 3

(Tuesday January 29, 2002 12:25 PM )

Released on 18/03/2002
Label: United

When I reviewed the debut album for this series I was nothing short of optimistic: now, three albums down the line it is reassuring to know that I was right.

Taking the whole art imitating life imitating eating concept to its furthest extreme, DJs Jurr and Roelove (under the production guidance of Mark at Zownd Studios) reproduce the 'Salle Neige' and 'Bar Rouge' pre, during and post dining Supperclub experience for you to take home and relive, repeat and rediscover.

You need look no further than the 'Scene of the Crime' and nude Bacchanalian inner sleeve artwork to realise that Amsterdam's Supperclub embraces a deeply artistic aesthetic.

In the club itself, its 150 guests are entertained by its eccentric personnel and due to the ever changing lighting become part of its living painting.

Furthermore, Supperclub is a platform for innovators, designers, DJs, VJs, photographers and artists with exhibitions from talents all over the globe.

Musically, over two CDs we are encouraged to relive to the 'Salle Neige' ultra laid back pre-meal bar experience and the upbeat and housier 'bar rouge' post-prandial digestif.

Opening with the vocal version of Kinobe's 'Oh Not, Not That Again' 'Slip Into Something' could have been critical suicide but thankfully the eclectic variety of the selection more than atones.

Highlights on CD1 are the Away Team mix of Shirley Bassey's '(Where Do I Begin) Love Story' , the Troublemakers' Bali-Hi reminiscent 'Get Misunderstood' and the Dzihan and Kamien remix of Serge Gainsbourg / Jane Birkin's 'Je T'aime Moi Non Plus'. On the 'Bar Rouge' side the tempo paints with the richer hues of the vocally sweet, deep, afro and latin house spectrum from notaries including the Brand New Heavies' sounding Rurals, Miguel Migs (his pelvic thrusting 'Infectious Groove' does exactly that) and Fini Dolo.

Quite the result all round then. But why is this relevant to us here in Blighty? Well, following an international expansion project, Supperclub is opening in Rome in February and will soon come to London. Can't wait.
