The Hextatic duo are more recognised for their VJ mixing than their truntablism, but if doubters of the ambidexterity remain then this should put them on notice.
Robin Hextatic is a Solid Steel radio show DJ mainstay and, it is said, he never misses a beat.
Like their elaborate visual displays, what we get here is a rich and varied collection that darts between styles and genres in a mix that bursts with ideas - partly aided by the duo using CD decks to time stretch and loop the tracks.
But reading through the track listing it becomes pretty apparent that, even with a whole bank of effects, none of this should work.
OK, so we all know the derivative relationship between reggae and drum 'n' bass, but that doesn't mean that Dawn Penn's 'No, No, No' can be successfully mixed into drum 'n' bass or that ripped-up breaks will flow into 'The Message'.
Needless to say it all works, if not seamlessly then very plausibly.
But then this is all pretty much part of the day job when you consider that other delights on offer include Ike & Tina's 'Funky Mule', Toots and The Maytels' Funky Kingston' and Boards Of Canada's 'Aquarius'.
Essential armchair party fodder.
