HOSPITAL - 'Plastic Surgery 4'

(Thursday March 20, 2003 2:04 PM )

Released on 31/03/2003
Label: Hospital

Warning: don't d'n'b and drive. A compilation of organic and energetic jungle like this is on a label called Hospital for a reason: speeding behind the wheel could put you in casualty.

We're not talking ugly Jeremy Clarkson Seventies "man"-rawk either.

These sublime beats are perfect for modern midnight marauding, as road tested by this dotmusic scribe very recently, as long as you can hack the pace.

Cruising around moonlit hairpin bends and dark motorways, headlights glaring into your eyes, requires a special kind of aural companion.

Wallpaper beats are a recipe for narcolepsy. Miss that sharp turn and you'll wake up under the surgeon's knife. That's why you need Plastic Surgery 4 instead.

The good doctors at Hospital have that essential "X"" factor that elevates the bland to the brilliant, to keep you sharp and cruising: quality control.

Because at very worst Plastic Surgery 4 is merely average. At best it's incredible.

'Touch' by DJ Lee and Dkay of 'Barcelona' - anthem fame, is soaring housey-jungle fused with a classic 2step bassline in all it's hooky glory.

The Zero Tolerance mix of Lenny Fontana's classic 'Spread Love' is a blatant hands in the air screamer. Embrace those flailing snares and jazz funk bass bombs: they are your friends.

Influx Datum's tearing rework of Landslide's garage anthem 'It's Not Over' goes where Agent Black's 'Feel Good' lead - flipping sublimely from d'n'b to UKG and then back, in the same track. Tomahawk seems to crystallise years of black soul into the jungle template. Syncopix's 'Swollen' edges towards the trance 'n' bass of John B, halting before it breaches Gatecrasher's gates.

With much of the house-flavoured warmth here, it adds some welcome contrast.

But the mixed CD of this double compilation is bookended by two masterpieces - and that's without even mentioning London Elektricty and High Contrast's contributions. To finish is garage's Zed Bias, making his debut in the d'n'b arena.

'Something About This' - is a soothing reggae roller. Like the vocalist Simba - best known for his 2step work with Zed and El-B - says: "there's something about this I can't resist/just play it again and again."

As if this embarrassment of riches wasn't enough, the collection opens with a true heart wrencher.

Have you ever heard a tune you want to die to? It's an odd concept admittedly, in the cold light of day. But if tunes like Derrick May's 'Icon', DJ Krust's 'True Stories' or Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' make you want to pass away happy, then you should try 'Mirage' by DJ Kalm & Citizen feat. Adam M. It's all about those live melancholic strings on this gem baby.

And of course it sounds great behind the wheel.

But with powerful tunes like this, it's best not to d'n'b and drive. Unless you're on the Autobahn.
