Drum and bass ain't dead, it just smells funky.
If anything this night's performance by Bristol's Kosheen and Brazil's DJ Patife and singer Fernanda Porto confirms what many have been saying over the last few months. Drum and bass on its way back into the mainstream.
With J Majik's 'Love Is Not A Game' on Radio 1's playlist and Digital's 'Deadline' pulling people back in (while R&B and garage go ever more pop) it was only a matter of time before those who like their music with a bit of substance (of a musical nature of course) re-evaluated the UK's original homegrown sound.
But it's the live groups that are creating the biggest buzz.
Kosheen, led by singer Sian Evans and supported by producers Darren Beale and Markee Substance, inevitably bring comparisons to Breakbeat Era.
Both use strong female singers over ferocious beats and heavy basslines to create fantastic energy. In some ways they're the equivalent of the nu-metal-rock/ rap crossover coming from the US, drawing on music of both black and white origin.
Using drums, keyboard, guitar and a well strung double bass they create a cavernous sound that envelopes and cushions Evan's powerful, unwavering voice. This girl has no problem with stage fright.
After getting Normski's overlong intro out of the way they open up with the truly frightening 'Suicide' and push, shove and elbow through a set that alternates between extremes of high and low energy, closing on their best cut 'Hide U'. The crowd love it.
