The sun might be baking the soil into scorched, cracked earth outside, but inside Arena six the lights have been cut and the already sweating crowd have been enveloped in pitch black.
Layo and Bushwacka! are on fire at the moment and this is their first live gig in the UK, so the crowd have packed-into the suitably understated darkness in equally suitable numbers.
The tech-funk duos skill lies in their understanding of the well placed bass line and the intricate, but minimal, use of effects. Whereas lesser producers use large drum rolls and obvious builds to work the dancefloor, L&B produce the same effect through subtle tweaks.
One of the bonuses of this production technique is their records are equally suitable for home and club listening. But the noise produced in these environments is radically different. What sounds like subtle, atmospheric music at home is transformed by club soundsystems into turbo-charged bass line lunacy.
Having said this, little could have prepared us for the size of today's bottom end.
As the duo layer house and sublime breaks with all manner of effects, the power surge of the bass is immense, rocking the arena into a continuous gyrating mass.
In terms of performance their live act turns out to be little different to earlier sets, apart from the addition of an energetic MC, who leaps about while the duo stay stuck firmly behind turntables, and a bank of sequencers and/ or effects units.
The show is backed by minimal video projections displaying a two dimensional figure repeating the same dance move over-and-again, or a man floating through a city skyline.
It's a far from spectacular visual performance, but strangely it doesn't matter and when the rising bass structure of Devo's 'Mongoloid', reinterpreted as the duo's forthcoming single 'Love Story', kicks in the already body-rocking crowd explodes out of the darkness to greet it with charged enthusiasm.
Ensconced behind the controls, Layo and Bushwacka! deliver one of the most memorable performances of Homelands 2002. And they barely even move.
