They say never trust a thin cook. Add to that never trust a bored DJ. You can always trust DJ Patife, however. You can trust him to stew up glorious jazzy jungle anthems, sweet Brazilian vibes and to look like hes having the time of his life chucking them into the melting pot.
DJ Patife, alongside his friend DJ Marky, is the leading light of the Brazillian jungle scene. Theyre also core members of the closely knit British drum n bass fraternity. And while its a shame hes booked to play so early 6:30 pm it does mean he can fire up the soundsystem to the max before the midnight draconian sound limiters kick in.
And fire it up he did. Patife plays it soulful and funky in a Fabio or Calibre style. And to disco-step anthems like Peshays U Got Me Burning and Influx Datums Back For More or the Brandy What About Us bootleg and his own Sambassim remix, he leapt, threw his hands aloft and bounced behind the decks.
Sporting glasses [not shades] and shorn once-dreadlocks, the usually chilled Mr Patife looked like he was going to generally leap out of the tent with enthusiasm.
Hyping the crowd was one of the hottest MCs in jungle, Stamina. This man can both rhyme and sing, and with his gentle yet empowering voice hes the perfect foil to Patifes rhythm riot. He also caught the eye of the odd lady or seven, with the MC having fairly unsubtle chats with keen female crowd members during the jungle tunes epic breakdowns. Arranging some post match festivities Mr Stamina?
Play on playa.
But the whole set came to a climax as Patife dropped Markys Latin anthem Caroline Carol Bela (aka LK). The soulful tune has been huge in jungle clubs for the last year, but it was while on tour with the Brazilian DJs that Stamina adlibbed the new vocals: Its the way that we bring this sound to you.
They now grace the chart-bound version and as they perform the track to Homelands, the tent explodes in song. Just how Patife likes it.
