Compared to the last time she graced the Main Stage, Macy Gray has toned her appearance down considerably. Obviously that's all relative, she's still a striking sight to behold dressed in an elegant white suit, wild Afro flailing in the breeze and goggle-like sunglasses glued to her face.
Whatever her appearance might be, Gray's personality will always be entertaining enough to build any performance around. Today, more than usual, she's highly sexed-up; must be something to do with the country air.
Her whole show is one uninterrupted track rolling from song to song, strung together by her band's funky grooves over which Gray freestyles/waffles/mumbles. It's a tough one to call whether you see the deconstruction as freeform adventure or indulgent noodling that detracts from the song. Judging by the laissez faire reaction of the crowd, it appears they can't decide either.
One thing's for certain, Gray injects some much needed soul and colour into the day whether it's the Motown feel of 'When I See You' or the sensual anthem 'I Try'. When she pleas with the crowd to lose their clothes and then shows them the lead by baring her arse, you know nothing's taboo.
Meandering in parts but utterly captivating in others, you can't help but admire her unpredictability.
