Blur - ''Coffee & TV' '
(Tuesday June 29, 1999 6:03 PM
)
Released on 29/06/1999
Label: Parlophone
The obvious second single from '13' puts Graham Coxon reluctantly into the spotlight as he fronts his first Blur single with that laconic voice and distinctive guitar playing. It says something about the band's self confidence and their apparent lack of concern over 'shifting units' that this was probably the only real contender to follow 'Tender'. It was never an album designed to play host to a string of 'hits'. So let's delight in that beautiful intro and oh so Blur beat - it couldn't be anybody else - the amazing revelation that people in the country will hurt you "because of who you are" and the dreamy, Wire-esque chorus. And if all that's not enough, there's Graham's overdriven, bastard guitar solo to contend with. It aint 'Song 2', but it's still menacing in its own way.
