Merz is Conrad Lambert who currently enjoys a high profile as one the most exciting new acts to emerge this year. The sound is a combination of programmed dance styles and traditional song structures, in this case a breakbeat powered folk vocal. Merz numbers amongst those acts who have emerged from the disintegration of traditional musical genres, blending influences from an array of global sources. This song is, however, less complex than this description might suggest. 'Many Weathers Apart' combines a bongo-inflected breakbeat with an effects-laden vocal and succeeds by virtue of its gentle production which allows Lambert's distinctive vocals to take charge. If that's not enough for you, there are mixes from Francois K and State Of Bengal which add to the single's DJ appeal. JP
