Slum Village are that fairly common hip hop phenomenon, a criminally underrated crew who hail from outside NY/LA. In fact, they're from Detroit, which makes an interesting change. With 'Fantastic (Vol.2)' they have made the kind of album that A Tribe Called Quest's 'Beats, Rhymes and Life' should have been, in fact it seems like the most natural transition imaginable when Q-Tip himself drifts into the cut on 'Hold On'. Across the 19 tunes that make up this expansive long player Slum Village showcase a truly innovative approach to production especially on deep and dubby tracks like 'Jealousy'. At times it's a little excessive on the smooth lovin' tip but always with a satifying 'pumping from the stereo in the summer' kinda vibe. 'Fantastic' is sure to attract plenty of attention with Slum picking up props from Q-Tip and the album featuring the considerable talents of Busta Rhymes, Pete Rock, Kurupt and D'Angelo (excellent on 'Tell Me'). The kind of form that ATCQ have been lacking. JP
