'Mambo No 5' is this year's 'La Macarena', a frothy little Latino number that encapsulates the summer holiday vibe. A bouncy tune with lots of mambo-flavoured trumpets, scratching and references to jumping up and down, moving it all around, clapping hands and a list of girlie names and situations such as 'Sandra in the sun' or 'Mary all night long', it's not surprising that this catchy tune has been the European smash hit this summer, topping charts everywhere. And of course anyone into cricket will recognise it as it has been the theme tune for Channel 4's cricket coverage since June. There's also a pounding, acid-influenced dance mix for those late night summer hot spots and a sultry, soulful trumpet-led mix for chilling out after hours. The song is a 50s number written by king of mambo Perez Prado, who himself had a number 2 hit a few years ago with 'Guaglione', the theme tune for a Guinness advert.
