Hailed in some quarters as a return to form this is completely dependent on whether or not you felt that the Tricky Kid had lost it in the work that followed the unquestionable brilliance of 'Maxinquaye' - and before we go any further this ain't better than 'Maxinquaye'! What is clear here is that Tricky - previously a control freak at the mixing desk - has loosened his grip on the direction of the album's sound and 'Juxtapose' is consequently less demanding than his own always unique mental sludge. So, if you don't like the Tricky of 'Pre Millenium Tension' and 'Angels With Dirty Faces' you may well find him more approachable on 'Juxtapose'. The album is probably more consistent than either of the aforementioned but nowhere does it offer a track with the mind bending intensity of 'Bad Things' or 'Money Greedy'. Still, put purist tendencies on one side and enjoy the most straightforwardly catchy album the great man has graced us with since his debut. JP
