With the tidal wave of music that is released on a weekly basis it's very refreshing to stumble across something that stops you dead in your tracks. Five track EP 'The Engine House' from South London newcomers Orange Can is such a piece of music.
Opening track 'In The Bag' starts off with atmospheric strings and some weird fog-horn sounding keys and then slips into ballad land with the barely audible yet strangley haunting vocals of Jason Aslett.
Next up is 'Down Where She Lives (Reprise)', a beautiful, dreamy affair that harks to lazy summer days. The rest of the tracks are equally outstanding creations; soundscapes, moulded with samples, hypnotic vocals, guitars, richly textured and with a warm feel.
The promotional blurb compares them to a mixture of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Stone Roses and The Orb. For once the press release is no exaggeration. They're labelmates with the Beta Band and will deservedly be singled out as the critics - and music fans - favourites. Well worth investigating.
