Eric Clapton - ''Blue Eyes Blue''
(Monday October 18, 1999 6:04 PM )

Released on 25/10/1999
Label: Reprise / Warner

"I thought that you'd be loving me / I thought you were the one who stayed for ever.."

That's right we're in film territory, this being Clapton's contribution to the soundtrack of Runaway Bride.

It is deeply nauseating music, no doubt perfectly suited to a film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere whose last screen pairing saw the most successful and unusually crass retelling of the insulting ''tart with a heart'' tale.

However, it's not a good single to send out to an unsuspecting world when your foremost concern is promoting an album of the best of this once mighty artist's previous two decades.

Clapton has been a presence in Hollywood for the past 20 years, recording for films like Lethal Weapon 3 and Phenomenon. Judging from this latest offering, perhaps the artistic shackles imposed by such a steamroller of an economy are just too tight.

Perhaps it'll be another 'Wonderful Tonight'..
