Label:
Wheat are the latest in a triumphant line of US alt-rock bands that, in the last 12 months, have been responsible for a fistful of sublimely brilliant records. Sparklehorse, Pavement, Mercury Rev, Smog, Flaming Lips, and most recently Folk Implosion have all pickled minds with their enthralling, skewed sounds. From Taunton, Massachusetts, Wheat deal in a similar kind of emotional fall-out as Sparklehorse, though a little less handicapped by such crippling torment. Not to say this isn't driven by melancholia and wondrous despair. Taken from their patchy, but frequently mesmeric second album `Hope And Adams', `Don't I Hold You' is a masterpiece of lovelorn despair and gliding, lilting melodic poise. Heartbroken single of the year.
