Lenny Kravitz has decided to dip his toe in the remix pool for the first time on his next single 'Black Velveteen', taken from his album '5'. In fact he's jumped off the diving board, going straight for the deep end with top remixers Roger Sanchez and Stonebridge, then wading back to the shallow end for newcomer on the block, New Yorker RPO. Certainly the remixes haven't done the song any harm. 'Black Velveteen' doesn't match the calibre of his last hit 'Fly Away' so the remixes add a welcome new dimension. Sanchez' S-Man remixes are real drivers, shifting the tune into the fast lane in his typical tuff, funky house style. The main mix foregrounds Kravitz' vocal and underpins it with acidy bass sounds and strong beats. Stonebridge takes a completely different route on his EXFM mix. Leaving house behind, he takes the rocky road and does it with a superlative drum sound, though the vocals seem a bit overwhelming at times. On his second mix he reverts to a four on the floor builder with hypnotic bass, crowd cheers and chopped up vocals. RPO gives the song a different twist going underground with distorted vocals over four on the floor and percussion fillips.
