"Disco's don't make much sense/ But maybe that's because I can't dance" exhales singer Cormac Battle in the first lines of Dublin trio Wilt's new single, thus setting the stall out for their musical manifesto from the word go. This is definitely not music for dancing to. Rather, it is supposedly music for moshing to, and as such it has all the subtlety of an episode of Sunset Beach watched at full volume.
The fact is that people who mosh and don't dance should, and indeed do, demand more from their music than this. Having endlessly trotted out names such as the Foo Fighters and Husker Du as key musical influences, Wilt seem to forget that what made these bands great was their ability to incorporate intricate musical arrangements into songs of enormous power and volume.
Unfortunately, Wilt only seem able to deliver on the volume front. The net result is a single that they no doubt fondly imagine sounds like a tidal wave of emotion sweeping through the speakers but is, in fact, about as entertaining as spending an afternoon on the M25 listening to rush hour traffic.
