For the uninitiated, Folk Implosion are Lou Barlow of Sebadoh and John Davies of Refrigerator. 'Free To Go' is the first single to be released in the UK, from their critically acclaimed third album 'One Part Lullaby'.
Famed for their soiled introspection, this record sees the band embrace breezy folk pop. Devotees will enjoy the refreshing upbeat flavour, whilst the catchy beat and pop rhythms can't fail to convert dissenters.
Indeed, Barlow and Davies sound like they've been driving down the freeway with Beck on the stereo and the sun in their eyes. The sound is still lo-fun, but the feel is fresh summer blues. "Free to go, still to young to leave."
Essentially it is the sound of maturing songwriters, hitting their peak and recounting their younger days, lost love and the pain of break-up. Though, for all that, the end result is optimistic.
If only all rockers could grow old so gracefully.
