Proving that Flat Eric has indeed been squashed, Quentin Dupieux, AKA Mr Oizo, emerges from behind the mask of Levi adverts to parade a triumphal collection of tech funk tunes.
A concept EP that uses his track as a platform on which to build interpretations, the original chomps along on broken beats and clipped guitar stabs, before it hits its groove as a driving bass thunders into the mix.
As a track, this is an unfulfilled piece of work, but as a seed bed for ideas it bursts with potential and the first mix, 'Last Night Shalark Killed Mr Oizo (by Shalark)', makes the most of the opportunity. Locking the beats into a shuffling four four, he maximises the bass end and adds screaming metal guitar where Oizo had tiny funk chords. Against the odds, it works.
But the stand out re-working comes from Alex Gopher, who strips the track to its funky back bone, creating space to allow a four to the floor kick drum to build inside the electro break beat.
Herbert tweaks the track's eccentricity and veers off into the nether regions of electronica, while Demon adds sweeping mellow keyboards.
Finally Oizo returns with his 'Electro Shit Non Stop Mix' which delves into the bass bins, screws the synth sounds and rips the structure to shreds.
